A new group of future Servants workers finished two weeks of missionary training in Vancouver, Canada yesterday. They were part of the first ever Orientation Course run by Servants in North America.

Trainees came from America, Canada and the UK and will be joining Servants teams in Jakarta, Yangon, Kolkata (Calcutta) and Vancouver.

The course participants enjoyed input on a range of topics, from living in the slums to prayer, empowerment and transformation. Each participant also shared their own story and took part in community life with the Vancouver team.

Servants established an office in North America in 2006, in response to fast growing interest from Canadians and Americans in mission amongst the urban poor in Asian slums.

Interest has grown in North America through Servants’ involvement in the slum track at the last Urbana Missions conference, and through Scott Bessenecker’s book: The New Friars, which describes the emerging movement of incarnational missionaries relocating into slums around the world.

Previously, Servants workers had mainly come from Australia, New Zealand, England, Switzerland, Germany and the Philippines. Servants Orientation courses have been held over the past 25 years in Europe, Australasia and Asia.

[Photos and videos from the Orientation will be posted on the Servants Facebook group. Contact us if you are interested in training opportunities in your area.]
