Many people in the slum communities where we live and work have been through much trauma in life – fires, eviction, sexual abuse, violent deaths of family members. But trauma is not only experienced by poor people, or those in a war zone – trauma happens everywhere, and to anyone. Perhaps past trauma still impacts the life of the stranger in front of you in the queue, or your work colleague, or someone at church … join this workshop to be better equipped to be part of someone’s healing.
An invitation from Andrew Lim, at the People’s Seminary.

The scope and impacts of psychological trauma in our world cannot be underestimated. Yet many feel a sense of fear and inadequacy when approaching this subject or journeying with those who have had traumatic experiences and who continue to live with its impacts.
The manifestations of trauma and the complex jargon that exists around it can leave us feeling like it’s an area best left well alone. The consequences of this often is a people group who feel ever more isolated and alienated by their trauma experiences, who feel other than and cannot seem to find safe spaces within our churches and organizations.
Trauma-informed ministry and mission
Whilst there is nothing simple about trauma and the way it wreaks havoc on human lives, de-mystifying trauma so we can be informed and sensitive in our settings will help us be more effective in our pastoral, missional and prayer settings.
This training aims to be a taster that will use story, dialogue and experience sharing to educate and de-mystify human experiences of trauma. Exposure to testimony about trauma and recovery is one of the best ways to learn how to journey with those who have experienced it.
We will give time to share our fears and hopes when approaching this subject, and learn some best practices for accompanying trauma survivors well.
We will also aim to share from the insights we have gleaned from the Holy Spirit as we have journeyed alongside traumatised people. We will hear insights trauma survivors have heard from heaven in their own lives and all the richness that flows from traumatised and marginalised voices as we read the bible together.
