At Servants we are very excited this month to add a new title to our books page – two Servants members have read a pre-release copy, and we are both excited to highly recommend Fight Like Jesus.

As Lent approaches, I highly recommend this new book: Fight Like Jesus: How Jesus Waged Peace throughout Holy Week.
Jason Porterfield has written an incredible book. I first met Jason and his wife Laura during my team-visit to Jakarta over eleven years ago. While I only got to be “team” with them for a short time, I am forever grateful that God brought our paths together for a time. And I am so grateful Jason and Laura helped launch the Servants team in Jakarta. Now, eleven years later, Jason is having his first book published by Herald Press.
Fight Like Jesus is a profound read. Jason journeys with us through Holy Week, helping us see that on each day of Holy Week Jesus is teaching us His way of peace. Beginning on Palm Sunday with Jesus crying out, “If only you knew the things that make for peace,” this book walks us through many difficult yet beautiful Biblical texts. In Fight Like Jesus, Jason masterfully mixes Bible exposition and careful text-study with modern-day stories and applications for peacemakers today.
Please consider reading this book and telling others about it. This is NOT just a book for Mennonites to read (although, yes, it is published by Herald Press). This is a book that all followers of Jesus should prayerfully read– especially during Lent and Holy Week. The book launches on February 1, so pre-order your copy now.
C Dee says
Fight Like Jesus is jam-packed with great Biblical scholarship and cultural and historical insights about all that happened during Holy Week – the last week of Jesus’ life on earth, leading to his crucifixion and resurrection. Yet all that information is clear, engaging and easy to understand. What is easy to understand, isn’t necessarily easy to practice. Each chapter includes practical lessons in how to do peace-making Jesus’ way, which will give us all enough challenges to work on for years to come. Our churches and our world sorely need us to learn and practice Jesus’ ways of building God’s peace.
As a sneak preview, the first lesson is to move towards the conflict zone, instead of avoiding it. Jesus intentionally walked towards Jerusalem where he knew he would be killed. Likewise he calls us to be present in the places that are most devoid of peace. The book shows us, once we make that choice, how to use the way of Jesus, to bring peace where it’s needed most.

About the Author
Jason Porterfield has been part of Servants since 2007 when he was a founding member of the Servants team in Vancouver. He also started our new team in Indonesia. And has been part of the international coordinating team, and coordinated our North America team.
Making his home in places abandoned by society, from Canada’s poorest neighborhood to the slums of Indonesia, has shaped Jason. His passion is to cultivate God’s shalom wherever it is painfully absent, and to help churches embrace their peacemaking vocation.
