The waves of the tsunami swept away something more important than just Aceh’s fishing boats and homes. The tsunami took away people’s ability to earn a living, the simple dignity of being able to put food on the table every night and provide for their families.

A Servants team member reported, “The friendliness and warmth of these people is amazing. Everywhere we go, even in the midst of the pain, people are smiling, calling us to sit and talk, and thanking us for coming to help. Over and over they just keep saying we want to work, we want to go back to work.”

Servants to Asia’s Urban Poor has been invited to partner with local Christians in assisting the entrepreneurial poor who lost their small businesses in the Tsunami, with a particular emphasis on assisting women and young people.

The Dignity Project is a micro-enterprise program designed to restore livelihoods through small business, savings and loans, reaching 200 families in the first year.

The program will also incorporate a training component for young people from urban poor communities in English and computer skills to enhance their employment prospects.

We are looking for people passionate about serving the poor through small business and education, and willing to live incarnationally amongst the urban poor.

You will need to be a self-starter since this is a new ministry, and strongly committed to raising up local leadership.

Useful skills include: small business experience, accounting, finance, English and computer teaching.
